Merthyr and the Girl
Director - Writer - HTV

Actress Donna Edwards and her mad Merthyr family.   Francis returns to his obsession with the actor and reality.  Where do they meet?  1986 (40’)

"Merthyr and the Girl" was a piece of raw reality, even if indulgent, ass Karl Francis often is, to his general theme of radical revolt against the order of things.  (Western Mail)

This 1988 HTV film caused some controversy.  A verité portrait of Welsh actress Donna Edwards who was then a lead player in Welsh soap "Dinas", the film contrasts her glamorous screen presence with the tougher realities of her home life.   This compelling film is at times painful to watch as the compassionate, but sometimes blunt actress clashes with family and friends.    In particular there are some harrowing scenes involving an alcoholic friend, whom we learn died shortly after filming was completed.
